Beyond the border

Beyond the border

Bardonecchia, Turin (Italy). The routes of the migrants who flee to the heart of Europe cross this village of 3,000 inhabitants. Syrians, Bengalis, Senegalese, Tunisians, teenagers or slightly older, gather along the railroad tracks and set off to cross the Alps and reach France. Here, at 2,000 meters above sea level, in deep snow, they wear jeans, tennis shoes or ankle boots. Bubacar, who set off from Guinea Conakry and survived the desert, Libyan prisons and the Mediterranean Sea, also took the road to the mountains in Bardonecchia. He sank his feet in the snow, which he had never seen before, and faced a tough journey of four hours to the border. This reportage tells about his journey to Briançon. A journey that, at least this time, ended well, but which emphasizes, once again, Europe’s failures and delays in facing mass migration from Africa and Middle Eastern countries.
