The night of Europe

The night of Europe

The border between Bosnia and Croatia has become a “bomb” ready to explode at the doors of Europe, a bottleneck where it is hard to guarantee rights and dignity. The migrants crossing the Balkan route arrive in Bihac from Sarajevo and stay there for months. In the best scenarios, they stay in an overcrowded reception center, trying countless times to cross the border, facing the violence of the Croatian police. Andrea Gabellone’s reportage follows their journey from the Vucjak camp, built on a former landfill, to the woods full of land mines. The migrants call the journey “the game”, during which they stop over in squats on the outskirts of Bihac, in abandoned buildings, without water and electricity, which traffickers rent to them. “We need help to address the situation and strengthen the rights of those who need international protection”, UNHCR representatives said.
